The Founding Fathers had the vision of setting up a republic in which one civilian was elected to lead the executive branch of the government. The office of the president has been a part of the overall governmental structure of the United States since George Washington assumed the role in 1789. Since this time, 45 more men have held the office of president. Some men had longer tenures than others. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only president to serve more than two terms, and William Henry Harrison had the shortest presidency, dying of pneumonia just 31 days after he was inaugurated. The timeline of the American presidents includes men who called themselves Federalists, Democratic Republicans, Whigs, Democrats, and Republicans, and each president left behind their own legacy.
